Why Sundara
What You Gain from a Structured, Bounded Engagement
Advisory work that produces a written deliverable, carries a fixed fee, and is scoped honestly from the outset operates differently from most consulting relationships.

The Core Advantages
Pricing You Know Before You Start
Every engagement has a published, fixed fee. The price does not change based on how complex the situation turns out to be, how many hours are logged, or how long the client takes to respond to drafts.
A Document You Can Use Independently
The output of each engagement is a written document. You can share it with your board, revisit it six months later, or use it as a reference in a conversation with a lawyer or accountant. It is not dependent on us remaining involved.
Direct Access Throughout
The person who handles the initial conversation is the person who conducts the engagement. There are no handoffs to colleagues once the scope is signed. You work with the same practitioner from first call to final document.
No Created Dependency
The engagement ends with the deliverable. There is no structured follow-on, no ongoing retainer that begins by default, and no incentive on our side to extend the work beyond its defined scope.
Local Familiarity
Based in Kuala Lumpur, working with Malaysian family businesses for several years. The cultural context, the regulatory environment, and the specific pressures on businesses here are not abstract to us.
Honest Assessment Over Reassurance
If the analysis surfaces something uncomfortable, it is presented directly. Advisory work that softens findings to preserve the client relationship tends to produce documents that validate existing thinking rather than add to it.
In More Detail
Each Benefit Explained
Expertise in a Narrow Area
Sundara works in a deliberately limited space: succession planning for family firms, decision governance, and leadership facilitation. Not business development, not marketing, not IT systems. The narrowness is intentional — it allows the work to be done with depth rather than at the breadth of a generalist practice.
This means that when a company hires us, they are not paying for someone to come up to speed on an unfamiliar domain. The questions we are likely to encounter, the objections that come up in family discussions, and the common failure modes in transition plans are things we have seen before.
What this means in practice
- Engagements do not start with a learning phase at your expense
- Common family business dynamics are familiar, not novel
- Questions are more precise because the domain is known
- Risk of generic recommendations is lower
A Process That Is Clear from the Start
Each engagement follows a defined sequence: scoping conversation, signed agreement, work phase, internal review, and delivery. The client knows at each stage what is happening and what comes next. There are no surprises about the process, even if the content surfaces unexpected things.
Timeline estimates are given at scoping and updated if anything material changes. Most engagements finish within the stated window.
Process stages
- Introductory call — scope and fit discussion
- Written scope document and fee agreement
- Fieldwork — interviews, review, or facilitation
- Internal review of draft deliverable
- Delivery and closing discussion
Fixed Fees, No Billing Uncertainty
The three services are priced at RM 4,300, RM 2,650, and RM 1,100 respectively. These are the prices. There is no hourly rate that compounds as conversations extend, no travel charges added separately, and no invoice that is materially different from the agreed figure.
Companies know what they are committing to before they sign. This also makes it straightforward to account for the cost internally, present it to a board, or compare it against the value of the decision it informs.
What is included in the fee
- All fieldwork within Kuala Lumpur / Klang Valley
- Written deliverable document
- Closing review session
- NDA and standard engagement agreement
Outputs That Hold Up Over Time
A transition plan drafted today should still be a useful reference document eighteen months from now. A decision architecture report should describe a system that people can actually recognise and work with, not an idealised version of how things should theoretically operate.
We put time into making deliverables readable, specific, and grounded. Generic recommendations are not useful. The test we apply internally is whether someone not involved in the engagement could read the document and understand both the situation and the reasoning.
Quality criteria for deliverables
- Specific to the company, not template-generated
- Grounded in what was actually observed or discussed
- Reviewed internally before delivery
- Written to be useful without explanation from us
Comparison
Sundara vs Typical Advisory Arrangements
A straightforward look at what differs between this practice and common alternatives.
| Feature | Typical Arrangements | Sundara |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing structure | Hourly or daily rate, final cost unclear at start | Fixed fee per engagement, stated upfront |
| Who does the work | Sold by senior, delivered by junior staff | Same person from first call to delivery |
| Deliverable | Presentation slides, often requiring interpretation | Written document, readable without us |
| Engagement length | Open-ended, extends as scope expands | Defined scope, ends with deliverable |
| Conflict of interest | Incentive to extend or expand work | No financial incentive to extend beyond scope |
| Local context | International frameworks applied unchanged | Work informed by years in the Malaysian market |
What Sets Us Apart
Distinctive Features of This Practice
Engagements That Begin With a Written Agreement
Before any fieldwork begins, the client receives a document setting out scope, deliverable, timeline, and fee. Both parties sign it. This reduces misunderstanding and creates a clear reference point for any scope question that arises later.
A Preliminary Call That Is Genuinely Exploratory
The introductory call is designed to determine fit — not to sell. We have declined engagements where the timing was not right or the service did not match the actual need. This makes the calls worth having.
Timelines That Are Respected
Most engagements complete within the initial estimate. If circumstances cause a delay on our side, we communicate promptly and without waiting to be asked. Clients should not need to chase for an update.
Confidentiality That Is Structural, Not Just Promised
Client data is stored on encrypted systems, access is limited to those working on the engagement, and the NDA signed at the start covers all material shared. There is no case study use of client content without written agreement.
