Our Story
Structured Thinking for Complex Business Situations
Sundara was founded on a straightforward premise: most businesses benefit less from more advice and more from clearer structure. We work on the governance and planning questions that compound over time if left unaddressed.
Back to HomeWho We Are
The Practice Behind the Name
Sundara began in Kuala Lumpur in 2017, when its founder — after nearly a decade in corporate advisory roles — recognised that a specific gap existed for smaller family-held companies. These businesses often could not access the structured thinking that larger firms received, and they rarely benefited from the retainer-style engagements that dominated the consulting market.
The response was a practice built around short, defined engagements. Each service has a stated scope, a clear deliverable, and a fixed cost. Work begins only after a preliminary conversation confirms it is well-suited to the client's situation. There is no selling of additional services during an engagement.
The name Sundara — drawn from Sanskrit, broadly meaning "well-formed" or "considered" — reflects the intention behind every piece of work: that it should be crafted with care, proportioned to its purpose, and useful beyond the moment it is delivered.
Our Mission
Helping Businesses Think More Clearly
Our work focuses on three recurring challenges that leadership teams in family businesses encounter: preparing for a change in ownership or control, understanding how decisions are being made in practice, and running a planning process that produces real commitments rather than a document no one returns to.
We do not position ourselves as generalist management consultants. The services we offer are specific and bounded. If a company's needs fall outside them, we say so early and can occasionally suggest a more appropriate resource.
What we offer, to the companies we work with, is a period of structured attention from someone with no stake in the outcome other than producing work that holds up on its own terms.

How We Work
Professional Standards We Hold
Confidentiality as a Default
Every engagement is covered by a signed NDA before work begins. Information shared by staff or family members is not disclosed externally or used in anonymised case studies without explicit written consent.
Written Scope Before Starting
Every engagement begins with a written scope document. Both parties agree on outputs, timelines, and fee before work commences. Changes to scope are discussed openly and, if significant, documented as amendments.
No Conflict of Interest
We do not hold equity positions in client companies, receive referral fees from third parties, or accept work from competing firms in the same sector during an engagement period.
Peer Review on Deliverables
Written deliverables go through internal review before being shared with a client. A second person reads every final document for logic, gaps, and readability before it leaves the practice.
Data Handling
Client documents and interview notes are stored on encrypted systems. Access is limited to those directly working on the engagement. Data is deleted or returned to the client at engagement close.
Candid Communication
If our work surfaces findings that are difficult to hear, we present them clearly and without softening that obscures the point. The value of an external perspective depends on it being honest.
Our Context
Business Advisory in the Malaysian Context
Many of the businesses Sundara works with share a common background: they were built by one or two founders, have grown to a scale that requires more formal management, and are now facing questions about the next chapter. These are not questions a standard strategy framework resolves neatly.
Family businesses in Malaysia operate within a distinct set of dynamics — including cultural expectations around seniority, inter-generational trust, and the relationship between business relationships and personal relationships. Consulting work that ignores these realities tends to produce recommendations that look good on paper and prove difficult to implement.
Our practice is built around that reality. The engagements we offer are deliberately limited in scope so that they can be conducted properly, with attention to the actual human situation rather than a generic model. A Strategy Refresh for a family firm requires listening carefully to each member's perspective before drawing any conclusions. A Decision Architecture Review means understanding how decisions are actually made, not how an org chart suggests they should be.
Being based in Kuala Lumpur, working with companies across the Klang Valley, and having done this work for several years in this market shapes how we approach each engagement. We do not import frameworks developed for large Western corporations and apply them unchanged. What we bring is structured thinking informed by local experience.

Consider Whether an Engagement Is Right for Your Situation
An introductory conversation takes about 20 minutes and costs nothing. It helps both sides decide whether the scope of an engagement matches what the company actually needs at this moment.
